Mike Ford
Mike Ford, our board operator, has been a radio guy for most of his life. He did his first broadcast on his 16th Birthday and that was more than a few summers ago. He first came to Alaska in the summer of 1979 to volunteer at radio KNOM on the shores of the Bering Sea in Nome. Mike had many wonderful experiences that first year including mushing through a white out between Stebbins and St. Michael with Iditarod Veteran and all around nice guy Jerry Austin, interviewing a French Baron that was surf sailing between Wales and what was then the Soviet Union and even interviewing Olympic great Jessie Owens in the front seat of a 73 Nova in the 95 degree heat of a Fairbanks sun filled July Afternoon (He was there for the ARCO Jessie Owens Games). With a few family related stints in Washington State between then and now he always seem to come home to Alaska. Mike has done just about every job in Radio on just about every format the medium offers and for some strange reason he still loves it!
Over the course of the last 30 plus years working in a sedentary industry (at least it was for me) he gained a lot of weight (he was over 300 pounds). After some time, he was able to come to terms with that and lost over 100 pounds five years ago. It continues to be a challenge but one he regularly faces with optimism. He now enjoys running and Tang Soo Do (a Korean martial art). He loves to be active, get out and do the things Alaska has to offer. Cross country skiing this winter is his next opportunity.
In The Coming Months he plans to share some of his insights on weight loss and exercise with anyone that may be struggling!
Karl LeRay
Karl LeRay, our internet guru of “Keeping Konnected with Karl LeRay” haunts from afar. From Kingston, Jamaica to be more exact. Karl was born to thoroughly normal, upper middle-class parents in Jamaica (the country) during the Kennedy Era. They immigrated to the United States where he was raised in a loving, supportive household in New York City, and educated well by his parents and his teachers. Naturally…he couldn’t stand the heat & bustle thus his permanent residence in Alaska.
Some people have to work at climbing the corporate ladder. For Karl, it seems more like he’s just riding up the escalator. Today, Karl has made himself into the Nerd’s “Nerd.” Karl actually enjoys keeping up with technology such as computers, operating systems, web, & social media.
Karl has always been an avid science fiction fan (particularly the “hard-core” variety that uses real science). When not writing lame biographies of himself, other hobbies include motorcycling, camping, spontaneous road tripping, listening to too loud music, gourmet cooking (and eating thereof), advanced chili design, model building, reading, writing, gaming, cross-continental travel and an almost unknown sport called “thinking” (a vigorous avocation; it has a small but fiercely loyal following). He’s been known to be seriously into Internet Porn from time to time though he claims that this somehow enhances his desire of poetry and other literature. This is where that whole writing thing comes into play. A proponent of the needlessly long sentence, he has never met a comma or a clause that he didn’t like. He also sings a mean karaoke too.
In reality, Karl probably works more than he should. With his full-time business (Apex Logic) and several part-time projects, free time has become a precious commodity. He yearns for a vacation more than anything else. Perhaps the day that he achieves his goal of becoming independently wealthy, he can finally settle down and do what he wants to do most which is…uh…he’ll figure out what that is when he has a moment to do so.
We at the Big Alaska Show are looking forward to 2010 and all the great Guests and adventures we will be bringing you!
