Our Science Guy: Gordon Snyder
/Meet our Science Guy, Dr. Gordon Snyder! Gordon explains scientific phenomena to help us appreciate the world around us a little more. His folksy, fun style is perfect since co-host, Mike Ford and I have 6th grade science fair mentalities!
But don't let his country style fool you! Gordon is one of the foremost authorities on water with an extensive background in chemistry, biology, hydrology, computer sciences, research and development as well as a having a consulting firm for decades. Even NASA hired Gordon for help with their water quality challenges.
Gordon's covered numerous topics such as whales, hummingbirds, frogcicles, beavers, salmon, drone technology and more. We have podcasts to prove it!
But his main focus has been on wetlands. As Gordon says, "Water, that's where life begins!" Gordon points out that Alaska has the most wetlands in the United States.
Now, Gordon is focused on his most ambitious project. He's restoring 55 acres of his farmland in northern Idaho back to its original wetland state. His project, "No Fence Wetlands", (www.nofencewetlands.org) is no small project. Construction started 2 years ago after years of going through the red tape permitting process. Gordon uses a popular Anchorage wetlands refuge, Potter Marsh, as an example of the value his wetlands can provide scientifically, educationally, for universities and for public consumption. Btw, Gordon builds his own websites!
At heart, Gordon is an educator teaching at all levels. For years Gordon has made science fair kits for students from first grade through college, teaching the science of water and just how interdisciplinary and valuable water is.
